Why & What I Paint

The natural world is my source of inspiration. I live on Cape Cod and love the coastal scenes and landscapes that surround me: vibrant colors that sparkle in sunlight, earth tones and textures with subtle variations, designs carved out by reaching branches or ebbing tides. I love natural places far from home as well, especially wild and rugged northern lands.

I have always been driven to create things that are visually appealing. My paintings express a sort of creative order and are typically somewhat idealized representations of the scenes that inspired them. My hope is that they bring a sense of peace to the viewer.

Brief Biography

My schooling and my work life were focused on the sciences and on education. I grew up in Connecticut and moved to Cape Cod at age 22. I was blessed with the opportunity to work in oceanographic research for twelve years and follow with a 30 year career at a K-12 independent school. While I have always been able to spend some time pursuing my artistic inclinations, I am able to devote more time to them in retirement.

I have learned much through of a variety of locally offered classes over the years, but as a determined "do-it-yourselfer," I have developed my style mostly through extensive time with art books, many failed paintings, and a good deal of stubborn persistence.

I have exhibited work in juried shows at the Falmouth Art Center, Cotuit Center for the Arts, and the Cape Cod Art Center (where I am a juried artist member). My work has received several "best" awards and a few honorable mentions. I also show and sell work at the Woodruff Gallery in Mashpee during the holidays.
